UPS Sizing for Data Centers and Critical Loads
Stop guessing kVA: a runtime/redundancy/load-factor framework, plus APC vs Eaton in the 20–40 kVA range, with battery-cabinet runtime tables.

Most undersized UPS deployments fail the same way: someone added up nameplate watts, picked the next-up kVA, and skipped the runtime calc. Here's the framework we use when sizing for a data center, hospital ICU, or telecom edge site.
kVA vs kW: why both matter
UPS units are rated in kVA (apparent power) and kW (real power). The ratio is the power factor. A 20 kVA UPS at 0.9 PF delivers 18 kW of real load. Modern IT loads run near unity PF — old servers and motors don't. Always size the kW number first, then convert.
Step-by-step sizing
- Sum running watts of all critical equipment. Use nameplate × 0.7 unless you have measured draws.
- Add headroom: 20% for future growth, 10% for inrush.
- Pick runtime target: 10–15 min for genset-backed sites (you need bridge time only); 30+ min for sites without backup gen.
- Decide redundancy: N (single unit), N+1 (parallel pair, one can fail), 2N (full duplication for critical Tier-3+).
Runtime tables (typical)
- APC Smart-UPS SURT 10 kVA, 50% load: ~7 min internal; +1 external battery cabinet adds ~25 min
- APC Smart-UPS SURT 20 kVA, 50% load: ~6 min internal; +2 cabinets adds ~45 min
- Eaton 9PX 11 kVA, 50% load: ~8 min internal; modular EBM adds 20–40 min
- Eaton 9395 40 kVA with external battery string: 15–60 min depending on string size
APC vs Eaton for 20–40 kVA
For most Pakistani enterprise sites in this range we recommend:
- APC Smart-UPS SURT: Best parts availability in PK, mature DCIM integration, strong dealer network. Good fit for IT closets and edge sites.
- Eaton 9PX / 9395: Higher efficiency at part load (Eaton ESS mode), better hot-swap battery design, preferred for data centers needing 24/7 maintenance windows.
Common mistakes
- Sizing on watts then forgetting PF. Always design at minimum 0.85 PF.
- Ignoring battery aging. Plan replacement at year 4 for hot-aisle installations.
- Single UPS for Tier-3 site. N+1 minimum for anything customer-facing.
